Elma de Vries

Elma de Vries is a family physician who works at Mitchell’s Plain Hospital in Cape Town. She is a senior lecturer in the School of Public Health and Family Medicine at the University of Cape Town and is a member of the Transgender Clinic Team at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town. She has worked in hospitals in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo before moving to Cape Town. She served as the chairperson of the Rural Doctors’ Association for 4 years (2000-2004). She was a board member of Sothemba AIDS Action (a local faith-based NGO that provides HIV counselling, support and community projects) from 2004 to 2009. She served as President of the Board of Médecins Sans Frontières South Africa from 2007 to 2009.

She is passionate about the right to access health care and became interested of the work of Gender dynamiX in 2006 when it had just been established. She is a co-author with dr Arnaud de Villiers of “A Guide for General Practice: Hormone Transition Therapy” that was published by Gender dynamiX in 2013. She has presented workshops at medical conferences on access to health care for sexual minorities and transgender health care.
