Transphobia in Schools Colloquium 2012

This paper was presented by our Advocacy Coordinator Sibusiso Kheswa at the ‘Challenging Homophobia and Trans-phobia in South African Schools and Promoting Good Practise’ Colloquium, which ran in Johannesburg on September 6th and 7th, 2012. Hosted by Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action and the Centre for Education Rights and Transformation, the colloquium was introduced as a forum where attending activists, researchers, policymakers and Department of Education representatives could collectively address the issue of homophobia and transphobia within educational systems. S’bu’s presentation in particular detailed the stories of parents, students, and teachers who have all personally experienced or been witness to the discrimination, violence, and stigmatization continually faced by transgender youth at schools.
