GDX Annual Human Rights Report 2024

High levels of stigma, discrimination and marginalisation against persons on the grounds of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression are well documented, as is the recognition that this leads to barriers in claiming agency, realising rights and accessing services, resources and opportunities. Heightened experiences of, and exposure to, violence and other human rights abuses are similarly evidenced that are commonly linked to one’s sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. These barriers can lead to reduced access to health and other essential services, adversely affecting the physical and mental well-being of trans and gender diverse persons and other members of the broader LGBTIAQ+ communities.

GDX Annual Human Rights Report 2023

Stigma, discrimination, marginalisation and other rights violations related to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression are well recognised barriers to claiming agency, realising rights and accessing services, resources and opportunities. Available data also clearly demonstrates that sexual orientation, gender identity and expression are determining factors adversely impacting on peoples’ experience of and exposure to, violence and other rights abuses; levels of access to health and other essential services; and adversely affecting the physical and mental well-being of trans and gender diverse persons and members of the broader LGBTIAQ+ communities.

GDX Annual Human Rights Report 2022

The correlation between sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, legal and social environments and the extent to which people are in a position to claim agency, realise rights and access services, resources and opportunities are well established.

In South Africa, human rights protections are firmly embedded in the constitutional and legal framework, thus affording trans and gender diverse persons and members of the LGBTIAQ+ communities legal recognition and protection. However, despite these legal protections, trans and gender diverse persons and members of LGBTIAQ+ communities continue to experience social exclusion, discrimination, violence and other rights abuses on a daily basis in all aspects of their lives, adversely affecting the extent to which individuals and communities are in a position to claim agency, realise rights and access services without fear of stigma, discrimination, violence and other rights violations.

Sistaazhood

Gender DynamiX works in close partnership with Sistaazhood.

Sistaazhood was created by Leigh Davids and Netta Marcus as a support group for street based, transgender, sex workers in and around the CBD area of Cape Town. The group serves as a haven for the exploited, alienated, and marginalised transgender community, who turns to each other for support. The group actively advocates for Social Justice and the Decriminalization of Sex work and Municipal Bylaws criminalizing homelessness.

Gender DynamiX (GDX) is the first registered Africa-based public benefit organisation to focus solely on trans and gender diverse communities. What started as a mere vision, slowly grew into a grassroots organisation. GDX has since become an institutionalised non-profit organisation (NPO) that is fundamental to the develop-ment of the trans and gender diverse movement(s) in South Africa and across southern Africa.
